Not long ago, I was looking at the digital search trends for our clinic. It is always fascinating—and sometimes emotional—to see exactly what women in Kochi are typing into their phones when they are looking for help.
The journey usually begins with hopeful, excited searches: "pregnancy test doctor near me," or "baby planning hospital near me." As the months progress, they search for "uterus checkup price" or "gynaecology hospital near me" to ensure everything is on track.
But as the third trimester approaches, a new, unspoken anxiety creeps into the minds of many mothers. The searches shift. They start looking for the "best" hospitals, silently wondering how they will endure the pain of childbirth. I have had women sit across my desk in Panampilly Nagar, tears welling in their eyes, asking if they can just schedule a Cesarean section because they are absolutely terrified of labor pains.
As a Normal Delivery Specialist, I want to tell you a secret that the older generation often forgets to mention: You do not have to suffer to be a good mother.
In our culture, there is a deeply ingrained myth that enduring agonizing pain is a required rite of passage for motherhood. Aunties and grandmothers will tell you to "just bear it." But modern medicine, and leading medical bodies like the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and ACOG, have a very clear stance: Maternal request is a sufficient medical indication for pain relief during labor.
In plain words: It is your right to ask for a painless delivery. No woman should be denied pain relief.
Today, as your Normal Delivery Specialist, I want to walk you through the two most effective, safe, and popular options for a painless normal delivery: Entonox and Epidural Analgesia. Let’s remove the fear of the unknown.
Why Choose a Normal Delivery Specialist?
Before we talk about the how, let’s talk about the who. Why does it matter who your doctor is?
In many large, crowded hospitals, a normal delivery can feel like a chaotic, rushed process. If a mother is in extreme pain and the labor is progressing slowly, the easiest route for a busy hospital schedule is often to wheel her into the operating theater for a C-section.
A dedicated Normal Delivery Specialist operates differently. My goal is to support your body's natural ability to birth your baby, while actively managing your pain so you feel empowered, not traumatized. We use patience, proper positioning, continuous fetal monitoring, and advanced pain relief options to ensure your normal delivery is a beautiful, calm memory.
Option 1: Entonox (The "Laughing Gas")
If you are looking for something mild that takes the "edge" off the pain without numbing your body, Entonox is a fantastic option.
What is it? Entonox is a premixed, homogeneous gas consisting of exactly 50% nitrous oxide (often called laughing gas) and 50% oxygen.
How does it work? When you are in active labor, you will be given a mouthpiece or a mask. As you feel a contraction starting to build, you breathe deeply into the mask. The gas enters your bloodstream rapidly and provides a state of "conscious sedation."
What does it feel like? You will still feel the contraction, but the intensity of the pain drops significantly. It makes you feel slightly lightheaded, relaxed, and detached from the pain. The beauty of Entonox is its short half-life. The moment you take the mask away and breathe normal room air, the gas leaves your system within seconds. You are in complete control.
Is it safe? Absolutely. Because it is mixed with 50% pure oxygen (which is more oxygen than is in normal room air), it is excellent for the baby. It does not stay in your system or the baby's system, and it has no long-term side effects.
Who is it best for? As a Normal Delivery Specialist, I often recommend Entonox for mothers who have a high pain tolerance but just need a little extra help during the peak of intense contractions, or for those who want to avoid needles and remain fully mobile during labor.
Option 2: Epidural Analgesia (The Gold Standard)
If you want comprehensive pain relief where you can actually smile, chat with your husband, and rest during your labor, the Epidural is the ultimate modern medical miracle.
What is it? An epidural is a regional pain-blocking technique. A specialized anesthesiologist places a very thin, flexible, plastic tube (a catheter) into the epidural space in your lower back. Through this tube, a continuous, carefully controlled dose of local anesthetic is delivered.
How does it work? The medication bathes the nerves that carry pain signals from your uterus and birth canal to your brain. It effectively blocks the pain of the contractions while keeping you completely awake and alert.
What does it feel like? You will feel a dramatic reduction in pain, usually within 10 to 20 minutes of the medication being administered. You will still feel "pressure" and the tightening of your uterus, which is crucial because you still need to know when to push. However, the agonizing, sharp pain is replaced by a dull, manageable pressure.
Debunking the Great Epidural Myths
In India, there is a tremendous amount of misinformation surrounding epidurals. I have seen mothers endure agonizing pain simply because a relative told them an epidural would ruin their spine. Let’s look at the scientific facts.
Myth 1: "An epidural will cause permanent back pain or paralysis." The Truth: This is the most common fear, and it is entirely a myth. The epidural needle does not touch your spinal cord. It goes into the epidural space outside the spinal fluid. While you might have a tiny bruise or tenderness at the injection site for a day or two, permanent back pain is not caused by the epidural. (Post-pregnancy back pain is usually caused by the physical strain of carrying a baby for 9 months and poor posture during breastfeeding!). Paralysis from an epidural is extraordinarily rare.
Myth 2: "If I take an epidural, I will definitely end up with a C-Section." The Truth: Extensive clinical trials and FOGSI research have proven that epidural analgesia does not increase your risk of needing a Cesarean section. As a Normal Delivery Specialist, I can tell you that an epidural often helps a normal delivery. When a mother is screaming in pain, her body is tense, and her cervix can refuse to dilate. Once the epidural is given, the mother relaxes, she rests, and often, the cervix dilates beautifully, allowing for a smooth vaginal birth.
Myth 3: "It will drug my baby." The Truth: Unlike older, traditional painkiller injections (like Morphine or Pethidine) which travel through the mother's bloodstream and can make the baby sleepy, an epidural works locally on the nerves in your back. The amount of medication that crosses the placenta is incredibly tiny and does not harm the baby or affect their breathing after birth.
Myth 4: "I won't be able to push, or feel my legs." The Truth: We use what is called a "walking epidural" or a low-dose epidural. It is designed to be tuned and adjusted. You may feel some temporary heaviness in your legs, but you are not completely paralyzed. You will still feel the urge to bear down, and you will be an active, conscious participant in pushing your baby out into the world.
The Dr. Gigi Clinic Difference: A Calm, Supported Labor
When you search for a "gynaecology clinic near me," you are not just looking for a building with medical equipment. You are looking for an environment where you feel safe.
In crowded maternity wards, you might labor in a room with other distressed women, which only heightens your own fear.
At our clinic in Panampilly Nagar, we believe your birthing environment should be as calm as your home. As your dedicated Normal Delivery Specialist, my team and I ensure that whether you choose the natural route, Entonox, or a fully managed Epidural, your choices are respected.
We discuss your pain management plan weeks before your due date. We prepare you mentally. When the day comes, there is no panic. There is just a structured, peaceful process guided by science and empathy.
It Is Your Choice. Own It.
If you want to labor completely naturally without medication, I will support you, guide your breathing, and cheer you on. If you want an epidural the moment labor begins so you can rest and save your energy for pushing, I will arrange it with our expert anesthetists without a single hint of judgment.
There are no medals handed out in the delivery room for suffering. The only prize that matters is a healthy baby and a happy, trauma-free mother.
Don't let the fear of pain steal the joy of your pregnancy. If you are anxious about childbirth and want to explore your options for a comfortable, painless birth, let’s talk.
